The “shiny thing” is the moment that grabs our attention - something that stands out in the context of the scene. It’s unexpected, unusual or simply different from what’s been established so far. Like a glint in the sand, it catches the eye because it breaks the pattern or introduces something fresh into the world we're watching.
Often, the shiny thing is what gives birth to the first beat of the game. It might be a bizarre character choice, a surprising reaction, a strange physicality or a bold emotional offer. Whatever it is, it’s not part of the normal rhythm - and that makes it sparkle.
It doesn’t have to be big or wild. Sometimes the most delightful shiny things are subtle: a blink that lingers too long, a repeated word, a mispronounced name, an odd pause. What matters is that it feels like a seed. It has the potential to grow into something playful.
Not every shiny thing becomes a game - but most games start with one. Part of the clown or improviser’s craft is spotting it, loving it, and choosing whether to follow it. Audiences instinctively lean in when they notice something special. So when something shines… notice it. Maybe even polish it a little and see what it can become.
