A bit is a comic idea or routine - a little chunk of funny.
It could be:
A short sketch or moment in a show
A repeated gag or running joke
A crafted routine or physical set-piece
A character game played in a specific situation
Think of a bit as the container - and the beats as what happens inside it.
In stand-up, a bit might be a 2–3 minute routine about going to the dentist.
In clowning, a bit could be a solo sequence where the clown falls in love with a mop.
In improv, a group might invent a silly ritual onstage — and that becomes a bit they return to or reference.
