This workshop is for comedy writer/performers who have already been developing material and are now looking for support creating a solo show. During the session we will cover:
The big questions to ask yourself before and during the process
How to start structuring your show and develop material
Workshopping/Teething problems - participants will have the option to talk to Charlie 1-1 for 5 mins about specific issues as well as workshopping material with the other participants
All solo and double act comedians doing original material are welcome (stand-up, character, sketch, clown etc.) Please bring with you all your notes/material so far and be prepared to take notes. Feel free to bring any props or costume for a specific bit you're working on but be aware that the space and time is being shared among participants.
Charlie is a Scottish comedian, actor and writer who has taken four solo shows to the Edinburgh Fringe. Her 2023 show, Picnic, was recommended by the British Comedy Guide and The Telegraph, who also included her in their Top Jokes of the Fringe. As well as Edinburgh, Picnic had sell-out shows at comedy festivals in Glasgow, Leicester, Vault and the Soho Theatre. It can now be watched on Next Up Comedy.
As a comedy writer, Charlie has worked with BBC Radio 4, BBC Scotland, Hat Trick Productions and Griff Rhys Jones. She studied Writing & Producing Comedy with Channel 4 at the NFTS under Bill Dare and has studied improv and clown with a variety of masters including Philippe Gaulier.
She is regularly engaged as a coach or mentor for comedians working on new projects and teaches courses in improv and character comedy independently as well as for Hoopla Impro. Earlier this year she taught sessions on creating solo work for the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama.
